He wander aimlessly westward until he was taken in by a small band of mercenaries known as the Dawnguard led by Quasi Stormrider. Quasi had a 14 year old son Galcean, Duncan and he became the best of friends. By the time he was 20 years old Duncan was one of the top fighters of the Dawnguard he found he had a natural talent for fighting. The Dawnguard had become the strongest mercenary group in the employ of Phurion crowned prince of Altea by the time Duncan was 24. On the dawn of the battle that would become known as The Dragon’s fall, the turning point of the war of the 5 kingdoms , Quasi had announced to the Dawnguard that they would be switching sides and joining Prince Wu Shen Li of the Zhou Kingdom in a sneak attack against Phurion’s forces. Some of the Dawnguard protested; Duncan the loudest of them, but Quasi’s decision was final. Duncan tried to convince Galcean to help him change his father’s mind but Galcean was convinced his father must have had good reason for the decision and stood by his father. Duncan would not compromise his beliefs and warned Phurion of the impending treachery. Leading a small contingent he was awarded by Phurion Duncan walled off the sneak attack of the Dawnguard. Many of the members of the Dawnguard including Galcean were reluctant to fight now that Duncan stood against them. Quasi would not stand down and was rallying the attack when Duncan challenged him to a duel to decide which side would stand down. Quasi accepted. This duel would be the birth of the legend of Duncan the Twin Fang, Duncan barely managed to grasp victory but victory he claimed killing Quasi. The duel would later be known as the “Quelling of the storm” , Galcean swore vengeance against Duncan for the death of his father but honored the terms of the duel and pulled the Dawnguard out of the war.
